I love it when I get to meet women who completely encompass the word BOSS. At the tender age of 16 she created a tween make up line, became a designer spokes person for Levis and content producer for Fashion Network, E News and Style Haul, Hilary Novelle is one of those people. Fresh off of her win on Shark Tank, I got a chance to hear how she started The Style Club and what it takes to be a badass BOSS.
StilettoGal: What was the inspiration in starting your company?
Hilary Novelle: I really wanted to create a one stop shop where you can watch and shop all in one place.
SG: Do you believe in having mentors and if so, how have yours shaped your life thus far?
HN: I do. I don’t think anyone truly understands what it takes to start a business unless they have done it before. Any advice from someone who has been in your shoes at one point and was able to find success helps tremendously.
SG: If you could give 3 tips for someone starting her own business, what would they be?
HN:
- Love what you’re about to give your life up for a couple years. Literally. And if you’re not willing to give up hanging out with your friends after work and going on vacations during the holidays stay at your 9-5. When you start your own business it’s like having a baby, I would think 😉
- Listen to your customers, they will help guide you
- There will be some good days and some bad. Know that the bad days only mean that the good days are ahead. Keep your head up and keep going.
SG: What are some challenges you have had and how did you overcome them?
HN: One of the hardest things for me to do was raising capital. I never had the connections to do so. To overcome it, I threw myself on Shark Tank and it worked. You just have to figure out a way to get from point A to B even though there are a million roadblocks in your way.
SG: What are three words that describe you?
HN: Passionate, Outgoing & Tenacious
SG: What has being on Shark Tank taught you?
HN: It’s a great opportunity to get your brand out there. Also, it taught me that they cut out A LOT of what really happened in that room. I think my pitch lasted over an hour and a half.
SG: What kind of shoe are you and why?
HN: I’m a stiletto boots girl they make me feel like a boss!
